iPhone 3G in Spain

July 15th, 2008 by sergi

As you may know, on July 11th Apple released the new version of iPhone around the world, important things has been updated and added to the phone as you can read here, but not only tech is starring the film, Apple has released this new model around the world and Spain is included.

Movistar belongs to Telefónica and it’s the biggest and most important operator in Spain who has 22,8 millions of clients. Maybe this is the reason because Steve Jobs and Apple decided bring the iPhone exclusively with Movistar or was the only one who accepted the Apple’s demand. But what Steve and company didn’t know is the bad rumours around this company, specially in the youngest spanish population, and the unlucky organization and…

All the spanish people had a lot of expectations on the release, but Movistar don’t let us know the data plans until a day before the launch! Bad move…

The D-day starts and most of the employees don’t know anything about iPhone, even more they don’t know anything about iTunes and how they can sign up a new customer account. Big heads of Movistar, haven’t you though to make a little course about this? I’ve readed the sign up process was 1 hour long! Bad move…

I don’t know if the next point is because Apple or the spanish company but the stock of the iPhone in Spain was ridiculous, only the main and centric stores has 30 or 40 iPhones, in my opinion this is not enough stock for a world release like this. Bad move…

And the prices of data plan:

We are in Spain, and this is the third world of europe and as this, we have the most expensive data plan, a colleague calculated that when you finish the contract with Movistar you will pay 1.100€ for your phone. Bad move…

So, my recommendation is buy the iPhone in another country which free iPhones like Italy or wait until the prices drop down or hold up a bank.

Conclusions about the new iPhone 3G

June 17th, 2008 by sergi

Last week Apple presented the so waited iPhone 2.0.

Surely you readed a lot of analysis about the new iPhone, showing the new caracteristics and a tons of information, so if you are not from earth and don’t know what the iPhone is, go to the iPhone’s Apple page and watch what’s going on here in earth :P

Now that you know everything about the new iPhone, let’s say what conclusions I have come:

  1. 3G: ok, this is the most wanted feature and here it is. Jobs said iPhone is the faster 3G mobile around the world, we have to believe it. Personally, the connection’s speed isn’t a big issue for me, so 3G? Ok, you’re welcome :)
  2. Camera: No changes for the camera and the big disappointment is the lack of a camera in the frontal to let the user make video conference and take advantage of the new increased speed.
  3. GPS: For me has no sense, if you have connection via wireless or GPRS or 3G, you can localize yourself through Google Maps and even make a route between two points. But in the other hand, it opens a range of possibilities like the port of the Tom Tom software, but knowing Apple… I think it never will come.
  4. Bluetooth: As you may know, bluetooth on the iPhone is functionallity downgraded and in the next release will be the same.
  5. Materials: The metallical back surface has been replaced by a plastic surface, in my opinion this is a good chance to reduce the cost of the production.
  6. Software: Apple announced the next iPhone software release, version 2.0. This new version will come with a lot of new features, most of them oriented to enterprise, like the supporting formats from Microsoft (word, powerpoint and excel), spotlight searching contacts, save images from the web to gallery and some more features you can get from Apple Press Release.

In my opinion, the new iPhone 2.0 is not the revolutionary product we were waiting for, and Apple has only limited to upgrade the connection speed with 3G, but thinking like Apple, the trully revolution is in the software not in the hardware.

First two weeks with my iPhone

May 18th, 2008 by sergi

As you readed, I’m a happy owner of an iPhone and I’ll try to resume some thoughts of the first two weeks with that gadget.

First of all I have to say I’m very happy with the purchase but the phone have some lacks like the camera quality but it’s enough to make some quick shots. Multimedia messagin’ is not supported out of the box but installing a program you can get it. At first contact, write with the keyboard is a bit difficult but after two days or some sms’ you get it and becomes the most wonderful writin’ experience I’ve ever had.

The quality of the sound in conversations it’s ok but the volume of the speaker are a little bit low, more volume don’t hurt anybody. Showing photos in the iPhone is a great experience and if you want to open the mouth of your friends or parents, do the zoom movement… terrific!

The most interesting and important thing iPhone has it’s the community behind the scene, with a program called Installer, you can install tons of programs, and day after day more programs are incoming.

Here and here at my flickr you can see some of the applications I’ve installed and a little explanation of it.

Twitter for iPhone

April 11th, 2008 by sergi

I’m a twitter and soon an iPhone user, so I’m searching for an application to run twitter in the iPhone.

I have found two alternatives:

  • MobileTwitter: A simple twitter client which you can see the direct messages and replies at the same window but you have to update your status in another one… You can get it through STE Source for Installer.app, http://apps.npike.net/repo.xml. The main features are:
    • Your timeline
    • Direct messages
    • Replies
    • Public timeline
    • Updating your Twitter status
    • Reply Directly
    • Open tweets on safari
    • Twitpic integration
  • Twinkle: Nice and simple GUI, very similar to twitterrific and has as main feature geo-location, if you enable it you can see other tweets near to you (of course the other guys must have twinkle). Very funny feature, isn’t it? To install Twinkle you must have Polar Bear Farm source added in Installer.app, http://www.polarbearfarm.com/repo/

If you try one or both tell me your experience! I’ll write when my iPhone comes to me… yeah! my treassssssure!!! :P
UPDATE

Thanks to Grant through the comments, I have discovered another twitter client for iPhone:

  • PocketTweets: Is a web-based client for iPhone. Through a nice interface exclusively designed for iPhone, you can update your twitter status, view friend’s status, direct messages or view public timeline. Personally I prefer a native application than a web-based application but it’s a nice alternative if this apps don’t convince you.

More iPhone 3G

April 3rd, 2008 by sergi

The news about the possible iPhone 3G are continuously growing.

Today, AT&T chief has confirmed the release of the so wanted 3G version. He specifically says that in the next months all the mobiles in the AT&T catalog will be 3G, then the release of the new iPhone will be around the next months and personally, I think it will be sooner, as I said before, surely in the next keynote.

So, what about my iPhone? I’ve tried to cancel the order but now it’s delivered and it will be mine around April 30th. I’m sure the new iPhone will be out a little after I get it! I’m totally sure, so I think I’ll sell it soon…

3G iPhone

April 2nd, 2008 by sergi

iPhone 3GAs you know, the other day I bought an iPhone and now I find that Apple seems to be preparing the new iPhone 3G…

I hope it only are rumours but all the net is crying for one of this. The alarm turned on with a rumour which claims asian manufacturers has recieved an important iPhone order, specifically 10 million of new iPhone models!

This new model will have OLED display which is greener (have you readed this Greenpeace???) and consumes less battery than the actual display, it means one of the main problems is solved thanks to this new feature, remember one of the reasons because Apple haven’t implemented the 3G is the battery consume. Another new feature is a natural evolution and comes together 3G, it’s the conference call and of course, the camera in front of the phone to make it possible.

When this new model will be available? Nobody knows except God Jobs, but the rumors says it will be in June, maybe in the next Apple keynote? But the rumors are getting weight thanks to the shortage of the iPhone stock in USA, actually in NYC are having a lot of problems to meet the big demand.

So pray with me… no more iPhones until Sergi has one!
