Recently I’ve purchased an used mac mini, this is the last mini with PPC architecture, see below the specs:

Processor: PowerPC @ 1,5 Ghz
RAM: 1Gb (originally 512Mb)
HardDrive: 80Gb
Misc: SuperDrive, WiFi, BlueTooth…

The reason of the buy is basically have a second mac for continuous tasks like downloading security copies of my DVDs. Another utillity I want to put on him is like media center, I know this model can’t handle the HD movies but can do streaming to my xbox360 for example.

So we could get the conclusion this mac are going to be online 24/7 but how can I connect to it? How can I control the status? We’ll cover this questions from now.

First of all, as you may know this model comes with Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and I have a macbook with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, the last version of the Apple’s OS comes with a very useful characteristic which is that all the Macs in the same network will discover each other automatically activating a simple option in System Preferences.

Go to “Sharing” in System Preferences and activate “File Sharing” and “Remote Management”. With the first activated, you can see the other mac on your finder, if you don’t see it at first, open a finder and press cmd+shift+k and you may see it, in my case I get a window like this:

As you can see Leopard recognizes automatically what kind of mac you have and puts an entry on sidebar

The option “Remote Management” helps to control the mac when you aren’t around and includes the “Screen Sharing” option, if you open mac in your mini you will see something like this:

Now you have a part of finder an option in top of the window called “Share screen” which lets you to see in a new window the mac you pretend to control.

In the next post I’ll write about how to share only one mouse and keyboard with two or more macs in the same network.

As you may know, on July 11th Apple released the new version of iPhone around the world, important things has been updated and added to the phone as you can read here, but not only tech is starring the film, Apple has released this new model around the world and Spain is included.

Movistar belongs to Telefónica and it’s the biggest and most important operator in Spain who has 22,8 millions of clients. Maybe this is the reason because Steve Jobs and Apple decided bring the iPhone exclusively with Movistar or was the only one who accepted the Apple’s demand. But what Steve and company didn’t know is the bad rumours around this company, specially in the youngest spanish population, and the unlucky organization and…

All the spanish people had a lot of expectations on the release, but Movistar don’t let us know the data plans until a day before the launch! Bad move…

The D-day starts and most of the employees don’t know anything about iPhone, even more they don’t know anything about iTunes and how they can sign up a new customer account. Big heads of Movistar, haven’t you though to make a little course about this? I’ve readed the sign up process was 1 hour long! Bad move…

I don’t know if the next point is because Apple or the spanish company but the stock of the iPhone in Spain was ridiculous, only the main and centric stores has 30 or 40 iPhones, in my opinion this is not enough stock for a world release like this. Bad move…

And the prices of data plan:

We are in Spain, and this is the third world of europe and as this, we have the most expensive data plan, a colleague calculated that when you finish the contract with Movistar you will pay 1.100€ for your phone. Bad move…

So, my recommendation is buy the iPhone in another country which free iPhones like Italy or wait until the prices drop down or hold up a bank.

Few days ago a friend of mine sent me an email explaining that an important security problem has been recently discovered on Mac OS X.

The issue lies in the implementation of AppleScript since at least Mac OS X “Panther”. Applications running with root privileges could accept commands from other applications that are not running with root privileges and then execute this second command as superuser. So, running some applications like installers or simply Onyx could open a backdoor to any hacker.

Exploding the problem, open a Terminal and write

whoami

it tells who are you, in this case it shows your username. Now write:

osascript -e 'tell application "ARDAgent" to do shell script "whoami"'

and… who are you? root!!!

This is because ARDAgent has the corresponding bit to the setuid especified to root. The problem is easy to understand and easy to solve too, you only have to change this bit. Open another time the Terminal if you don’t and type

sudo chmod 755/System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAgent

This command change the permissions of the executable and solves the problem. You have to know when you will repair the permissions this change will disappear, so save this line in a good place.

Last week Apple presented the so waited iPhone 2.0.

Surely you readed a lot of analysis about the new iPhone, showing the new caracteristics and a tons of information, so if you are not from earth and don’t know what the iPhone is, go to the iPhone’s Apple page and watch what’s going on here in earth

Now that you know everything about the new iPhone, let’s say what conclusions I have come:

3G: ok, this is the most wanted feature and here it is. Jobs said iPhone is the faster 3G mobile around the world, we have to believe it. Personally, the connection’s speed isn’t a big issue for me, so 3G? Ok, you’re welcome

Camera: No changes for the camera and the big disappointment is the lack of a camera in the frontal to let the user make video conference and take advantage of the new increased speed.

GPS: For me has no sense, if you have connection via wireless or GPRS or 3G, you can localize yourself through Google Maps and even make a route between two points. But in the other hand, it opens a range of possibilities like the port of the Tom Tom software, but knowing Apple… I think it never will come.

Bluetooth: As you may know, bluetooth on the iPhone is functionallity downgraded and in the next release will be the same.

Materials: The metallical back surface has been replaced by a plastic surface, in my opinion this is a good chance to reduce the cost of the production.

Software: Apple announced the next iPhone software release, version 2.0. This new version will come with a lot of new features, most of them oriented to enterprise, like the supporting formats from Microsoft (word, powerpoint and excel), spotlight searching contacts, save images from the web to gallery and some more features you can get from Apple Press Release.

In my opinion, the new iPhone 2.0 is not the revolutionary product we were waiting for, and Apple has only limited to upgrade the connection speed with 3G, but thinking like Apple, the trully revolution is in the software not in the hardware.

Hi… yeah, this is a freak post, I know but I’m dying to explain my little achievement. For those who don’t know about Othello, is also known as Reversi and you can read more about it in wikipedia.

Now, let’s go! Last night I’ve won the game against iPhone in seven steps, and you can see them in the pictures below. You start with white and what you see in the pictures is my movement and the machine’s movement. Try it and enjoy!

Thanks to Alexliam and his post (in spanish) about the compatibility of the blog with the navigation with an iPhone, I realized this blog isn’t compatible!

Oh my God, this blog which main topic is iPhone and Apple, can’t be no iPhone friendly, so I’ve ran to install the plugin that let’s you make your blog compatible with it, the plugin is called WPTouch.

Once the plugin is installed as the rest of the plugins, you can configure it through Settings->WPTouch, if you pay attention at the bottom of the configuration page, you will see a few recommendations of a plugins you may install and some pages you could make to explode all the features of WPTouch, for the time being, I have only installed a pair of plugins, Blip.it to visualize the embedded videos in the posts, and flickrRRS to show photos on my flickr account.

The other recommendations are making some pages called ‘Links’, ‘Archives’ and ‘Photos’ but I think I won’t make it.

And to show you (if you haven’t an iPhone :P) how the blog looks…
