I’ve bought an iPhone!

March 30th, 2008 by sergi

Yeah! The day has arrived… I’ve bought an iPhone through a friend who has family in USA.

Last March 27th I ordered an iPhone at Apple Store and indicated as send address an american address which give me my friend, the payment of the iPhone was realized with my spanish credit card without any problem.

Apple then confirmed my order and said I got the phone in the next 5-6 business days, on March 29th Apple sent me an email saying the phone was sent to the specified address, I hope the next week my friend’s parents will get the iPhone and bring it to me the next April 30th. It will be a long long waiting, meanwhile I’m reading about how to free the iPhone and which software I’ll be able to install. And of course, I’ll download the SDK to play with my phone and who knows, maybe in the future you’ll get a program from me to your iPhone.

I promise some pics of the iPhone when it arrives ;)

Flash for iPhone

March 20th, 2008 by sergi

flash_iphone.jpg

Since the announcement of the iPhone’s SDK the community around Apple is very excited and nobody wants to miss this unique opportunity.

The last company who wants to get involved is Adobe, at the last conference call Adobe’s CEO, Shantanu Narayen confirmed his company is working with Apple to bring Flash to the iPhone. This is very good news for iPhone’s users because too many webs use this technology and for now, it can’t be visualized on iPhone. So, this move benefits both Apple and Adobe, because it lets more users and developers come to iPhone’s platform.

I will stay tuned for more news and software development for the iPhone.

Sun wants to bring Java to iPhone

March 14th, 2008 by sergi

 iPhone Java

Sun Microsystems announced days ago they’re working to bring Java to the iPhone after the release of the new firmware 2.0, this is late June.

Sun wants to put their JVM with the Micro Editio (ME) as many of mobile phones comes with, but it’s a good idea? We must think about it as Alex Blewitt did in his entry. He exposed a lot of reasons why Sun can’t and should no bring Java to the iPhone.

Basically there are legal reasons because Sun can’t bring Java, Apple doesn’t allow the execution of third party code and any interpreter except iPhone’s.

The other reasons he exposed are based on the no need, iPhone doesn’t need Java applications, who wants it? who wants it having cocoa applications? And I add, who wants the slow Java applications, and who wants the memory eater Java applications?

I’m sure a lot of people thinks the same, meanwhile Apple haven’t say anything about that.

Apple presents the iPhone SDK

March 10th, 2008 by sergi

Last 6th March Apple presented the Software Development Kit, SDK, for iPhone.

It was a very wanted release which satisfied developer’s dreams. The most important new features are the support for Microsoft Exchange, Push mail, contacts and calendars which will come with the next release of the firmware, the 2.0.

The new SDK will bring us a lot of new applications developed by the community, for example in the keynote Apple presented various demos of EA games, Touch Fighter a 3D game developed in two weeks and the most popular instant message program, AIM. All those applications will be able at iTunes Store, more specifically at new App Store, a store where you can buy all the new applications that developers will share with us and put the cost of the application with a free option.

All of these news are fantastic but what’s the conclusion? Well, the liberation of the SDK for iPhone will open to the developers a huge number of possibilities and in consequence a huge number of applications to the end users. Apple has restricted some things like the VoIP through telephonic network but don’t in a wifi. Another thing to be considered is the limit of running one application at same time which means that you can’t run your favorite IM program and play with a game, but I’m sure developers will find a solution.

This keynote hadn’t said anything about 3G, I hope the news will arrive soon with the announce of the iPhonein Spain.

SCJP study guide has arrived

March 3rd, 2008 by sergi

As I posted before I want to get the Sun Certified Programmer for Java 5, and I started buying from eBay the study guide, so today the book has arrived from Cork, Ireland in a perfect condition and seems to be new.

The contents at a glance are:

  1. Declarations and Access Control
  2. Object Orientation
  3. Assignments
  4. Operators
  5. Flow Control, Exceptions, and Assertions
  6. Strings, I/O, Formatting, and Parsing
  7. Generics and Collections
  8. Inner Classes
  9. Threads
  10. Development

As first sight the contents are not very complex, some Java basics but I’ll pay attention to the point 7, Generics and Collections because I have never worked with generics, in the last work we used the version 1.4.2 of Java and that versions doesn’t have generics but I know the theory and the use. The rest of the content doesn’t seem to be very hard but the tools which helps us to program our applications like IDE’s masks the basics of Java and I forget it a lot of times… So I think this exam will be a great opportunity to refresh this knowledge and learn new of course.

You will be posted with any new about that.
