Nokia N96, the new iPhone killer?

February 12th, 2008 by sergi

Yesterday Nokia releases the new Nseries in the MWC at Barcelona.

One of the new Nseries it’s the new N96 which claims to be a new iPhone killer, but the specifications are a bit poor comparing with the iPhone characteristics.

The screen of the N96 has 2,8 inches with a 240 x 320 px of resolution, this is the worst spec of the N96 because seems to be a bit small for the screen size. Iphone has 3,5 inches with a resolution of 480 x 320 px. Concerning the OS, N96 has the third edition of Symbian for S60 and Wifi and HSDPA connectivity, remember that iPhone has a reduced version of Mac OS X Leopard and Wifi too.

One of the critical point is the battery life, N96 is able to reproduce video, music and TV throught DVB-H and the battery life is 180 minutes in conversation, 5 hours reproducing video, 14 hours of music and 4 hours watching TV. In this point iPhone wins too with 24 hours of music, 8 hours of talk time and 7 hours of video but nothing about TV because it hasn’t a DVB-H built-in.

But not all the specs are favorable to iPhone, the built-in camera of the N96 has a Carl Zeiss optic with 5 megapixels against the 2 megapixels that has the iPhone’s camera. Another important spec is the 16Gb of the N96 which is the same as the bigger iPhone, a positive point of view for Nokia and how this company is trying to introduce the music in its terminals.

And don’t forget the multitouch screen of Apple’s iPhone… I think Nokia try to get an iPhone killer but it’s very far way from Apple’s iPhone… in the specs but not in the price, N96 costs 550€ against 700€ of the iPhone, you think this diference is reasonable? Or the iPhone is too expensive?
